With the new year in full swing, I’ve been scouting out the 2023 home decorating trends and design styles to share with you.  I love taking a look at each year’s interior design trends — especially the ones I think will last beyond the next few months.  And, happily, most of the home decor ideas on this list should stand the test of time, making them easier to adopt.

Before we get into the interior design trends for 2023, as always, I recommend decorating your home in a way that makes you feel great.  So don’t feel like you have to adopt these ideas if they don’t resonate with you or work with the style of your home.  In fact, I don’t think it’s a great idea to jump on every new home trend that comes along.

However, you can’t go wrong in taking a look at the current design trends and styles, because it expands your awareness of what’s out there.  I’ve found that when I look at my spaces with a fresh perspective, I can often repurpose pieces I already own to create a brand new look.

What are the top home decor trends for 2023?

In the coming year, we’ll see an interesting mix of new and returning trends.  Some of the most popular interior design trends for 2023 include quiet luxury, the return of bold color, natural stone surfaces, closed floor plans, mixed metal finishes, statement lighting, and 60s and 70s influences — particularly in furniture design.

Several themes are appearing for interiors, with “elevated” being one of the keywords for 2023, and you’ll see that concept woven throughout this list.  Luxurious looks, sumptuous fabrics, and understated elegance are in — no matter what decorating style you prefer.

While the decorating trends for 2023 are a varied bunch, they all have the potential to bring a sense of beauty, comfort, and style to your home in the coming year.

What furniture is in style for 2023?

Due to manufacturing and shipping delays over the past couple of years, furniture styles for 2023 will tend to overlap the trends from last year. That means we’re still seeing plenty of curvy shapes and nubby fabrics, as well as rattan and cane, boucle’ and sherpa, light wood and burl wood finishes.

While curvy, rounded, and slope-armed furniture is still on trend, many interior designers are ready to say goodbye to the curved furniture styles of 2021 and 2022, favoring a return to more streamlined, classic furniture silhouettes in 2023 and beyond.

In addition, if you’re buying a large piece of furniture in 2023, such as a sofa or bed, you might want to choose timeless fabric options like linen, cotton, performance weaves, or velvet — rather than boucle’ or sherpa — as I think the popularity of nubby fabrics in upholstery will wane in the next year or two.

If you really love the look of boucle’ and sherpa, you can still bring that look into your home via pillows, benches, throws, or ottomans instead.

Is farmhouse style out for 2023?

While modern farmhouse decor is still extremely popular, in 2023 we’ll continue to see this style evolve into a more refined look, borrowing aspects from modern European, Belgian farmhouse, coastal, and Scandinavian styles.  This elevated version of modern farmhouse style shows no signs of slowing down in the coming year.

However, the original version of modern farmhouse style from a few years ago no longer feels current.  Even Chip and Joanna are doing something much more sophisticated these days!

With the addition of  luxurious textures, interesting shapes, natural elements, and a mix of vintage and modern pieces, farmhouse style is maturing into a classic, timeless aesthetic.

What interior design styles are trending for 2023?

In 2023 interiors will increasingly become less about what’s trendy and more about personal expression.  Rather than certain trends increasing or declining, we’re seeing different design styles merging.

For example, modern minimalist style typically incorporates clean lines, neutrals, and black elements; while maximalist style favors layered textures, color, and vintage pieces.  However, we see both design perspectives embracing the use of natural materials, such as wood, stone, wool, linen, and rattan, as well as many other trends on this list.

With the lines between different decorating styles blurring, you’re welcome to create your own take on any decorating style you prefer, leading to a more personal approach to interior design and home decor in 2023.

2023 Home Decor Trends and Design Styles

Read on for my predictions for trends in home decor and interior design styles for 2023, including kitchen design trends, furniture, living room decor trends, colors, and a look ahead at the summer into fall 2023 decorating trends.

As you’ll see below, most of these home decor ideas would work well in just about any room in the house — and with just about any decorating style — making them easy to adapt to your home.

Trend 1. Quiet Luxury

Luxurious living and an elevated mindset are where things are headed in 2023, and you’ll see that idea reflected throughout all of the trends on this list.

Fine living doesn’t have to mean fancy or expensive — it’s more about refinement and an elevated approach to how we decorate and live in our homes.

The quiet luxury trend involves creating spaces that feel sumptuous, sophisticated, and timeless — however that looks for you.

Have you ever looked at a room in your home and thought “it needs a little something else” — but not quite been able to put your finger on what? If so, then this post is for you. In the same way that the right accessories make any outfit better, these five things will take any room in your home from good to great.

1. The right rug

There’s nothing like a rug to really tie a room together. The right rug can help to establish a room’s color scheme, add texture, and unify disparate elements. Think of the rug as being the thing that balances out the other elements in the room. Is your room really colorful? Look for rug in neutral tones. If your room if full of smooth, shiny surfaces, consider a rug with a little bit of texture. Texture is really important. For even more advice on picking the right rug, click here.

2. Plants

The human eye is naturally drawn to shapes that are found in nature, and every room could benefit from a little something organic. A great way to achieve this is with plants. They make a room more interesting and give it color and life (literally).

Post Image

3. The right art

No room is ever complete without art. The mistake that most people make when choosing art is that they don’t get enough of it, and the things they pick aren’t big enough. Take a critical look at your space: if your art pieces look a bit lost on the wall, or they seem dwarfed by the furniture, it’s probably because they are too small. You can incorporate your existing art into a gallery wall, or try out one of these methods for creating large scale art or filling up a big blank wall.

4. Lighting

Lamps (and pendants and chandeliers and whatnot) are important not just because they make a room look cool, but because the right lighting can make you see a room in a completely different way. Check out our guides to picking the right lighting for your living room, bedroom, bathroom, and kitchen.

5. Textiles

Textiles are what make a room seem warm and comfy and inviting. Throw pillows, blankets, curtains — these are the things that make the difference between a really pretty showroom floor and a home. If the only thing on your windows right now is blinds, adding at least a roman shade will help your whole room seem cozier and more complete. And pillows and throws are a gimme. Use them to make tiny tweaks to your space. Need more color? A little texture? A little shine? Add some pillows. Bam. Done.

he 5 Secrets to Pulling Off Simple, Minimal Design

What differentiates a truly stunning, minimally designed interior from one that’s just not full of a lot of stuff? From a room that’s sophisticated and rich rather than plain and boring? Creating simple spaces isn’t hard, but it does require a particular balance of key design ingredients to make the right minimal mix.

1. A keen command of balance, proportion and other basics
When a space doesn’t have a lot of actual items in it, you have to be even more strict with basic design rules like balance, proportion and harmony. Furniture should all be in proportion with itself — meaning nothing sticks out as too big or too small. The visual weight of a room should be balanced (meaning one side doesn’t feel too much “heavier” than any other side). There should be harmony among your furnishings; not everything has to “match” but they should complement and coordinate. And of course, if you are going to add something too big or too small for dramatic effect — go either really big or really small to exaggerate that you’re doing something intentional.

2. Quality over quantity
Again, when you’re aiming for a minimal interior space, you’re going to want to splurge when you can on high-quality and well-made pieces, since you’re not just trying to fit as much into a room as you can. Pieces that are unique finds — not just straight from a catalog.

3. In the details
Details — small touches and designs on elements in the room — are important when you’re aiming for a simple space. Maybe it’s a gold-leafed edge of a frame. A embroidered element on a pillow. Something you don’t notice at first glance in a room, but something that adds to the richness without adding to clutter. And a variety of textures continues to be an important element in minimal spaces for this very reason.

4. Neutral, calming palettes with earth tones
This could easily be disputed, as there have of course been simple, minimal spaces that rocked color. But on the whole, when you’re aiming for a truly spectacular minimal environment, stick to neutral colors and those that show up in nature for an easy, sophisticated space.

5. Light plays a huge part
In minimal spaces, light becomes as an important element as the larger furniture purchases. Know when your light comes into your home and how it presents itself. Use window treatments to direct it how you want. And that’s just with natural light. As with the first suggestion, splurging on just one spectacular light fixture can set the tone for an entire simple space.

Want to know a powerful design secret that can make a HUGE impact in a room, is easy to implement and can work in absolutely any style of home design, ever? The secret is using multiple items of one type of design element, and the power is in the presentation. We’ve got the tips for using this decor secret.

What’s the difference between a collection and a perfectly arranged set of multiples? Well a collection is more focused on itself; deftly picked multiples are all about increasing the awesome of the room they’re in. A collection usually has a theme and a special meaning to the collector — a set of multiple items can be just about anything. And the multiple trick tends to have less parts than a collection, making it a great option for those allergic to too many small things in a space.

So why is this trick so easy to implement? Because using multiple items doesn’t require a ton of matching or a lot of thought; if you have something you like, just get several more like that (or just slightly different) and be intentional with your placement and arrangement (this look tends to work really well as a uniform line or grid, but of course there are exceptions).

As seen on A Beautiful Mess, two lines of perky plants placed in the same pots create quite an artistic array, more than just a solo pot might do and seeming much more intentional than a messy, unlined-up mix might appear. It’s similar to what happens in this post’s top photo, from Weekday Carnival.

Multiple objects don’t just have to be decorative. In this shot from VTWONEN] via Belle Maison, similar-in-style wood shelves create the perfect place for smaller decorative objects, and prove to be a much more powerful look than just one or two shelves.

Have similar art pieces that are only slightly different? Line them up in a space where they will be in stark contrast with the rest of the room’s color palette, and consider framing them with a graphic, dark colored frame to emphasis the repetitive feel. Shot by Stacey Van Berkel for Garden and Gun.

We love this example of using the same (probably affordable) paper to wrap canvases to create a multiple-piece art collage. Instead of being a more bohemian, random array of colorful art pieces, the monochromatic nature of the design is even more intense. Seen on Better Homes and Gardens.

Another example of using multiple similar, but slightly different, art pieces to create a more powerful design than if you only had one art piece or even a collage of dramatically different art pieces. Photography by Graham Atkins-Hughes via Desire to Inspire
